Rotary International is a service organization with approximately 1.2 million members in 31,000 clubs located in 166 countries. The international headquarters is in Evanston, Illinois, USA.

The Clearwater East (FL) Rotary Club was started in 1971. There are about 60 members and meets at noon on Fridays at the Radisson Hotel located at US Highway 19 North and State Road 60 in Clearwater, FL.

Membership is accepted by classification, for example, pediatric physician, food sales manager, direct mail, commercial insurance sales, etc. For diversity, each club only has one active member per classification. Members are generally the manager or owner of the business or division.

If you are interested in joining, please e-mail the club. You will receive an invitation to attend an upcoming meeting. There are financial obligations to membership, including annual dues of $150. Attendance is required at 60% of the weekly meetings. However, you may attend any Rotary club in the world to fulfill this attendance requirement. Before becoming a member, you will need to attend several meetings and meet the members. Also, you (and your spouse) will receive Rotary Information at a special session so you will know all the rewards and obligations of membership.

Clearwater East Rotary Club is a 100% Paul Harris Fellow club since April 1998, the 12th club designated as a 100% Club in the world. This means that every member has donated or been sponsored for a $1,000 donation to the Rotary International Foundation.

In addition to the Rotary Foundation, Clearwater East Rotary Foundation (501(c)3) has a long history of providing food, clothing and other services to members of the local community. This includes sponsoring Doorways Scholarships for Pinellas County school children, Operation Joy, an annual project to provide new school clothing and shoes for children whose families have been victims of crimes and those living in transitional and emergency living facilities. This project is in cooperation with Target stores, Pinellas County School Board and the Pinellas County Sheriff's Victim's Advocates. The fund-raising projects for Operation Joy include the Ernie Thomas Golf Classic, planned this year for October 10, 2004 at the Crescent Oaks Country Club, Tarpon Springs, FL.

If you do not reside in the Clearwater/St Petersburg area, you can locate other clubs through the Rotary International site: www.rotary.org.
